Guide

How Canadian fishing licences work.

Canada doesn't have one national fishing licence — the rules depend on where you're fishing and where you live. Here's the shortest path from "I want to fish this weekend" to legally in the water.

  1. 01

    Confirm your residency

Most provinces have a resident rate (usually 6+ months of primary residence in that province) and a non-resident rate for everyone else.

  2. 02

    Pick freshwater or tidal

Tidal saltwater fishing on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts is licensed federally by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, not the province.

  3. 03

    Choose the duration

Most agencies sell 1-day, multi-day, and annual licences. Annual licences typically follow either a calendar year or the April 1 – March 31 fiscal year.

  4. 04

    Grab any add-ons

Salmon, steelhead, trout, and trophy waters often require an extra stamp, endorsement, or classified-waters licence.

  5. 05

    Buy on the official portal

Every province page links straight to its government portal. You'll usually get a printable PDF and a wallet-size digital licence you can save to your phone.

One habit that saves headaches

Take a screenshot of your licence summary and store a photo of your Outdoors Card / WIN card in your phone. Enforcement officers accept digital copies in most provinces.
